Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle
Former President of the Republic of Chile
His Excellency Eduardo Frei is a Chilean politician and statesman. He served as the 31st President of the Republic of Chile.
In 1958, after working in the private sector, he began his political career with the Christian Democratic Party at a very young age. He was active in his father’s successful presidential campaign in 1964 and participated in the creation of the Eduardo Frei Montalva Foundation, a political and academic institution he chaired until 1993. After working as an engineer for many years, he was elected in 1989 to the Senate, where he chaired the Finance and Budget Committees.
In 1993, Frei was elected President of the Republic of Chile. As President, he helped to consolidate democracy in Chile, opened his country to international markets, and made significant improvements in health, education, and poverty reduction.
At the end of his presidential term, he once again became Senator. He was reelected to the Senate in 2005 and the following year became President of the Senate. In 2018, he was named President of the Infrastructure Policy Council (CPI), a position he maintains to date.
Frei is a member of the Executive Committee of the Club of Madrid, participates in the Asia-Pacific Political Cooperation Forum, and is frequently invited to speak on various topics in different international forums.
Frei studied at the University of Chile, where he obtained a degree in Civil Engineering with a major in Hydraulics. He also completed specialization studies in Administration and Management Techniques in Italy.
