Jeanine Añez

Jeanine Añez served as President of Bolivia, assuming office through constitutional succession following the resignations of President Evo Morales and Vice President Álvaro García Linera. She became only the second woman in Bolivia’s history to hold the presidency, after Lidia Gueiler Tejada (1979–1980).

Amid the 2019 political crisis triggered by widespread electoral fraud, Añez stepped in to stabilize the country and avert escalating social unrest. Her decision to assume the presidency came at great personal cost: she was held as a political prisoner from March 12, 2021, to November 6, 2025, under politically motivated charges. She was released after the Supreme Court of Justice annulled a 10-year sentence against her.

She was elected by popular vote to the Constituent Assembly in 2006–2007 and later served two terms as a National Senator representing Beni (2010–2015; 2015–2019).

She holds a law degree from the José Ballivián Autonomous University and postgraduate diplomas in higher education, public management and social oversight, human rights for children and adolescents, and violence prevention.
