The Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom (ASC) at Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for its Postdoctoral Fellowships. ASC seeks exceptional, independently motivated early-career scholars who will research, teach and participate in the vibrant life of the Adam Smith Center in Miami. Bachelor of Science in Business and Government Leadership

Courses

The degree consists of 45 credits of required coursework, including 12 credits at the Adam Smith Center, 6 credits in the College of Business, 6 credits in the Economics Department, and 6 credits in the School of Communications. The degree also features 15 credits of elective courses from various departments.

The Fellowship

Postdoctoral Fellows are members of energetic and collaborative intellectual communities at both the Adam Smith Center and FIU. Reporting to the Adam Smith Center’s Associate Director, Postdoctoral Fellows actively contribute to the Center’s mission and activities through:

  • Conducting original and independent research aligned with the Center’s mission and academic focus areas;
  • Presenting on their research at the end of each semester, and submitting publishable drafts of their work at the end of each academic year;
  • Teaching at least one course (or one academic seminar series) each academic year; and
  • Contributing to Adam Smith Center events, policy briefings and public outreach initiatives.

In addition, Adam Smith Center Postdoctoral Fellows receive opportunities for professional development as they prepare for the next phases of their careers.

Screening of applications will occur as positions become available and continue until positions are filled.

To be considered for an Adam Smith Center Postdoctoral Fellowship, please submit the following materials:

  • Cover letter detailing: (1) specific research project(s) that engage(s) the Center’s mission and academic interest areas; (2) why the Adam Smith Center is the best fit for your proposed research and how you intend to contribute to the academic life of the Center; and (3) teaching experience, if any;
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • Writing sample; and
  • Contact information for three academic references.

  • Competitive salary and benefits;

  • One-year appointment, renewable at the discretion of the Associate Director for a second (and final) year, based on performance and funding.
  • Doctorate in Economics, Political Economy, Public Policy, Government, International Relations, Business, Law or a related field (the doctorate must be officially conferred by the start date of the fellowship);
  • Demonstrated scholarly interest in economic freedom, entrepreneurship, classic liberal thought, free markets, individual liberty and/or the institutional foundations of prosperity;
  • Outstanding analytical, writing and communication skills;
  • Commitment to academic excellence and public scholarship;
  • Teaching experience in relevant fields is strongly preferred; and
  • Satisfactory completion of FIU requirements for postdoctoral employment.

Courses

45 credits of required coursework, including:

  • 12 credits at the Adam Smith Center
  • 6 credits in the College of Business
  • 6 credits in the Economics Department, and 6 credits in the School of Communications
  • 15 credits of elective courses from the following departments (with ASC academic advisor approval): economics, management, communications, entrepreneurship, politics, public policy, international relations, finance, or other applicable departments.

A student may also supplement the degree with an optional Micro-Credential (such as the Micro-Credential in Leadership Agility offered through FIU’s Center for Leadership), where the student earns a digital badge that can be displayed on a resume or digital portfolio.

Foundational Principles for Leaders in Free Market Societies
Adam Smith Center core course examining foundational Western economic and political philosophies, including those of Adam Smith, and their relevance to leadership in the United States. Compares prominent economic and political philosophies and explores their implications for American institutions and American leadership.

 ISS3129 – Political Leadership in the United States

Political Leadership in the United States
Adam Smith Center core course introducing the foundational principles of the United States’ political system and providing an overview of selected free market political and leadership challenges. The Congress, the Presidency and the Federal Judiciary will be examined, as well as key stakeholders including the media, lobbyists, and special interest groups. Significant contemporary challenges facing leaders in the United States will be discussed.

 ISS4362 – Quantitative and Qualitative Data Analysis for Leaders

Quantitative and Qualitative Data Analysis for Leaders
Adam Smith Center core course that introduces data analysis tools for leadership in organizations. Students engage in collecting and organizing both quantitative and qualitative data for analysis and presentation.

 ISS4950 – Leadership Capstone

Leadership Capstone
Adam Smith Center leadership capstone under the supervision of an Adam Smith Faculty Advisor, addressing an organizational challenge while applying the skills and theories from the degree program. (Repeatable)
